Going back to the old time days, the old times ways! This recipe certainly took me down memory lane. I am not sure there are many people who even make Red Mango any more. Its proper name is Red Mango, even though it is made from multiple mangoes.
When I was in primary school, our school was completely fenced around, with the exception of this one spot at the back of the school where there was a hole big enough for us to jump through to the house right next to the school.
Why pray do tell you ask were we as kids trying to get to the house next door when we should be in school? Miss Rose lived next door!!! And Miss Rose used to make Pholourie, toolum, tamarind balls, red mango and other little sweets to sell to the school kids. Miss Rose also knew all of our secrets, as everyone told her everything! Its sad to know the kids today will not know what these little treats are!
I remember it was 50 cents for 4 pholourie with chutney. Miss Rose used to fry it just a few minutes before recess and lunch time so it was piping hot when you got it. Even the teachers used to go through that hole in the fence to buy from her.
The Red Mango was homemade with mangoes from the tree right in her front yard. It was 25 cents for 1 piece served up in a piece of parchment paper. By the time you were finished eating you had red lips and fingers! It was lip smacking good. There are also the preserved red mangoes with is different from homemade. Preserved is not as tender and it obviously lasts a whole lot longer.
My sister said she was feeling to eat Red Mango the other day so I made some for July 4th holiday. It was so good!
