Recipe
2 cups warm water
2 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast
1/2 tablespoon sugar
1/4 cup melted butter
1 tablespoon salt
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup evaporated milk
6 cups of flour
1 tablespoon butter or spray can butter (to grease the baking pan)
1 tablespoon butter (to rub on the top of the bread)
Directions
Place the yeast and 1/2 tablespoon of sugar in a stand mixer, mixing bowl. Pour 2 cups of warm water in. Mix and leave for 10-15 minutes for the yeast to become active.
After 15 minutes the yeast will be foamy and fluffy.
To the active yeast mixture, add the melted butter, sugar, milk and salt. Mix together.
Add 3 cups of flour and place your stand mixer on low to start mixing.
Add 1 cup of flour at a time after that. The dough has to be kneaded for about 8 minutes.
Stop adding flour when the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl. Using your finger touch the dough, it should be sticky but not sticking to your fingers.
Cover with a dish towel and place in the oven to rise for 2 hours.
After 2 hours, remove the dough from the bowl and place on a floured surface.
Kneed the dough for about 2 minutes. Cut into two halves.
Roll each half out into rectangular shapes. Roll each one in and place it in a bread pan that has been sprayed or greased with butter, seam side down.
Cover again place in the oven to rise until it is doubles it size.
Heat the oven to 375 degrees.
Place the bread in the oven to bake for 25 minutes or until the top is nice and brown.
Remove the bread from the oven and rub the butter over the tops of it. This keeps the tops soft.
Turn it over onto a cooling rack…and start eating!
