Recipe
2 cups flour
1 cup of carnation milk
2 tablespoons of softened butter
1/3 teaspoon salt
2 cups of oil
FOR THE SYRUP
1 1/2 cups white sugar
1 cinnamon stick
1 inch knod of peeled ginger
1/2 cup of water
Directions
In a large bowl add the flour, butter and salt. Using your fingers rub in the butter. Once the flour starts to look and feel crumbled, add the milk. Knead the dough for 305 minutes until it releases from the side of the bowl.
Form into two balls. Cover with a damp paper towel and allow to rest for 15 minutes.
In a saice pan add all the ingredients for the syrup. Place on a low simmer and allow to reduce until the syrup is thick and coats the back of a spoon. This will take about 15 minutes.
Heat the oven to 400 degrees.
Place a baking sheet inside the oven.
Roll out each dough to round discs. Sprinkle flour if necessary to prevent sticking.
Place each rolled out dough 1 at a time on the hot baking sheet leaving it a minute on each side. Remove it from the oven and set aside. Repeat with the other rolled out dough.
Turn off the oven.
Pour the oil into a small pot on the stove under medium heat.
Using a pizza cutter or knife, cut the rolled out discs into 1/2 inch strips. Then cut the strips into 3 inch pieces.
Once the oil is hot, add in the strips a few at a time. Turn it every few minutes and allow to brown. Once it is a golden brown color, place in a heat proof bowl. Once all the pieces of dough has been fried, pour the hot syrup over the fried pieces.
Using a spoon keep mixing the syrup in. It will look like too much syrup at first, but you have to keep mixing…until it cools and the sugar starts to crystalize.
Keep mixing!!!
Once you see the sugar is coated on each piece of dough, start eating!
***Note
The part in the oven is to form a thin crust on the rolled discs, so that it does not soak up too much oil while frying.
