This Split Pea Soup is traditionally called Dhal in the Caribbean Islands. It is commonly made by the East Indian
folks. I am sure every culture has a different version of making this. In Trinidad we may add salted pig tails...its
not as bad as it sounds. Salted Pig tails makes any dish taste twice as good :) once you get the thought out of
your head that its a pigs tail you are eating.
When I make this at home I usually like to pour me a bowl and eat it hot off the stove! But typically we eat this
over rice with a curried side dish. Check out the Curry Goat recipe under the Meats link. Its so easy to make and
its a good comfort food.

1 cup of yellow split peas
2 cups of water
3 cloves of garlic
1/2 of an onion
1 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
1 teaspoon ground geera
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 habenero pepper (optional)
1tablespoon of vegetable oil
1 teaspoon green seasoning (here)
2 sprigs of chives for garnishing
I used a crock pot as it goes faster. In
a crock pot the cooking time is 15
minutes. If cooking it on the stove it
can take up to 45 minutes before the
peas starts to soften.
Rinse your split peas under cool water
and drain. Peel and chop your onion in
big cubes.
Add the two cups of water to your crock pot and
let it come to a boil.
Add your peas, turmeric powder, geera, 2 cloves
of garlic ad the pepper with salt to taste.
Cover the crock pot and let it whistle for 15 minutes. Turn
off stove and let it sit until you hear the little knob pops.
This lets you know its okay to open the crock pot without
getting steam burn. At this point you want to mix it and
make sure you smash the pepper, onion and garlic with the
back of you spoon to make it smooth and creamy.
Now you are going to heat the 2 tablespoon of oil in a metal ladle over
the direct heat on the stove. Add the last clove of grated garlic to it. Let
the garlic turn a nice golden brown color before turning the stove off.
Add the entire ladle with the oil and garlic to the crock pot with the split
peas. Be careful of this process as you are adding hot oil to a liquid. The
trick is to cover the pot as you submerge the ladle. Stir to combine.
Garnish with finely chopped chives and
enjoy!
